The minerals found in our precious cell phones and lap tops and electric cars, come at a hefty cost to the well being and humanity of the children who risk their their lives every day without choice in artisanal mines, with no protective gear, with no protective reinforcements. They make barely any pennies a day, not enough for food even, generally digging themselves deeper and deeper into a debt they will never escape. They are forced into this debt and this child labor, in some cases because they were gang raped by roving militias in their home village, and were taken away to an early death in the mines. It is not uncommon that children as young as four years old are carting hefty sacks of toxic minerals through the jungle past the corpses of other children who have collapsed on the same route they are trekking. The international corporations that do nothing to trace whether their minerals are being sourced from child labor or not, have little to no accountability. Just remember the next time you click like, or double tap for a heart, that a beating heart in Africa was extinguished so you could have that little piece of fleeting joy.

They'll burn down your home and they won't think twice
